ABOUT THE ARTIST

Skunk Anansie

Skunk Anansie is a British alternative rock band formed in 1994 in London. The band consists of vocalist Skin (Deborah Dyer), guitarist Ace (Martin Kent), bassist Cass (Richard Lewis), and drummer Mark Richardson. Skunk Anansie is known for its sound that combines rock, punk, metal, and electronic music, as well as its lyrics that frequently address political, social, and personal themes.

The name "Skunk Anansie" was inspired by "Anansi," a figure from African mythology, with "Skunk" added to give it a punk and irreverent touch. From the beginning, the band stood out for its live energy, with Skin being one of the most charismatic and powerful frontwomen of her generation.

The band's debut album, Paranoid & Sunburnt (1995), included hits like "Weak" and "Charity," which helped establish Skunk Anansie as a significant force in the 90s alternative rock scene. The heavy sound and provocative lyrics appealed to both audiences and critics.

The second album, Stoosh (1996), further solidified the band's success, with tracks like "Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good)" and "Twisted (Everyday Hurts)", which became classics in the band's repertoire. This album demonstrated the band's ability to blend aggression with melody, creating songs that are both powerful and accessible.

In 1999, Skunk Anansie released Post Orgasmic Chill, an album that showcased an evolution in the band's sound, incorporating elements of electronic and pop music without losing its characteristic intensity. However, in 2001, after touring with this album, the band decided to temporarily separate, with the members pursuing solo projects.

In 2009, Skunk Anansie reunited and released the compilation album Smashes and Trashes, which included three new songs, marking their return. Since then, the band has released new albums, such as Wonderlustre (2010), Black Traffic (2012), and Anarchytecture (2016), remaining relevant and active in the music scene.

Skunk Anansie is celebrated not only for its music, but also for its open and progressive stance on issues of race, gender, and politics. The band remains a powerful live presence, with Skin standing out as one of rock's most iconic vocalists. Their music, which challenges conventions and addresses important themes, continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
