ABOUT THE ARTIST

Air

Air is a French electronic music duo formed in 1995 in Versailles, composed of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel. The band is known for its atmospheric and melodic sound, which mixes elements of downtempo, chillout, ambient and pop, creating a smooth and engaging sound. Throughout her career, Air has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike, having played a crucial role in the development of electronic music and the "french touch" style, which gained worldwide popularity in the late 90s and early 2000s.

The duo's debut album, Moon Safari (1998), is considered one of the most iconic albums in electronic music. Moon Safari stood out for their elegant and ethereal sound, with tracks like "Sexy Boy", "Kelly Watch the Stars" and "All I Need" becoming instantly recognizable. The album was acclaimed for its refined production and Air's ability to create an immersive soundstage, characterized by smooth bass lines, floating synthesizers, and delicate vocal harmonies. Moon Safari not only established Air as a major name in electronic music, but also set the tone for the chillout subgenre, which would go on to gain popularity globally.

After the success of Moon Safari, Air continued to explore new sounds and expand his style. In 2000, the duo released the soundtrack for Sofia Coppola's film The Virgin Suicides. This collaboration marked the beginning of an ongoing working relationship between Air and Coppola, with the band contributing to the soundtracks of other films by the director. The soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides has been acclaimed for its ability to capture the melancholic and nostalgic atmosphere of the film, with tracks like "Playground Love" standing out for their evocative beauty.

In 2001, Air released their second studio album, 10 000 Hz Legend. This album represented a significant change from the sound of Moon Safari, with a more experimental and daring approach. 10,000 Hz Legend incorporated elements of progressive rock, experimental electronic music, and psychedelic pop, with tracks like "How Does It Make You Feel?" and "Radio #1" showcasing the duo's versatility and artistic ambition. Although it divided opinions, the album was praised for its originality and the band's willingness to explore new musical territories.

In the following years, Air continued to release a string of acclaimed albums, including Talkie Walkie (2004) and Pocket Symphony (2007). Talkie Walkie was seen as a return to the more accessible sound of Moon Safari, with tracks like "Cherry Blossom Girl" and "Surfing on a Rocket" standing out for their melodic simplicity and sophisticated production. Pocket Symphony, in turn, introduced influences from Asian music, with the use of traditional instruments such as the koto and the shamisen, showing the band's continuous evolution.

Throughout her career, Air has also been recognized for her collaborations with other artists and her influence on various areas of pop culture, including fashion, film, and visual art. His music has been used in numerous advertising campaigns, television shows, and films, cementing his place in popular culture.

Air is known for its ability to create music that is both relaxing and emotionally resonant, capturing the imagination of listeners with its unique sound. The band has maintained a discreet but steady presence on the music scene, continuing to release music and tour occasionally.

With a career spanning over two decades, Air has established themselves as one of the most influential and respected bands in electronic music. His innovative approach and refined aesthetic have left a lasting legacy, influencing a generation of musicians and producers. Air's music, with its ability to transport listeners to ethereal soundscapes, remains an important part of the electronic music canon.
