ABOUT THE ARTIST

Madness

Madness is one of the most emblematic bands of the ska movement and British pop music, formed in 1976 in Camden Town, London. Known for their fusion of ska, pop, rock and soul music elements, the band has become one of the most important in the British music scene, being particularly famous for its irreverent style, dance songs and innovative albums. The band's classic line-up includes Suggs (vocals), Chris Foreman (guitar), Mike Barson (keyboards), Lee Thompson (saxophone), Barney Rubble (bass), John Hasler (drums) and Daniel Woodgate (drums and percussion).

Madness emerged at the height of the ska movement, but quickly moved away from the traditional style, incorporating elements of new wave and punk. The band made a significant impact on the British music scene with the release of their debut album One Step Beyond... (1979), which includes the iconic single "One Step Beyond", a version of the Prince Buster classic, which became one of the band's biggest hits. The song was an explosion of energy and sound, featuring the unique blend of ska with jazz and rock influences, a style that became known as 2 Tone.

In the following years, Madness continued to release successful albums such as Absolutely (1980) and Seven (1981), which included other major hits such as "Baggy Trousers", "My Girl" and "Embarrassment". These songs showcased the band's ability to blend social and personal themes with danceable rhythms, as well as highlighting the humor and wit of Suggs' lyrics. Madness's style, blending social satire with catchy melody and Jamaican music influences, garnered them a huge fan base, and they quickly became one of the most popular bands in the UK during the 1980s.

After peaking success in the '80s, the band went through several lineup changes and hiatus periods, but continued to tour and release new work over the next few decades. The album Mad Not Mad (1985) was the last major release before the band went on hiatus, but its popularity remained strong on the British scene. In the late 1990s, Madness returned to the music scene with new albums and especially with the album The Liberty of Norton Folgate (2009), which was well received by critics and brought the band back to the centre of British music.

Madness has remained relevant in British music culture, being celebrated for its ability to innovate while staying true to its ska roots. The band was also known for their energetic live performances, with a vibrant stage style and a strong connection with fans. Over the years, Madness has been recognized as one of the main bands to popularize the ska movement in the United Kingdom, being a major influence for several generations of musicians and fans.

With a career spanning over 40 years and a lasting legacy, Madness is one of the most beloved and respected bands on the British music scene. His ability to combine danceable rhythms with af-sharp and humorous social observations has earned him a special place in the history of pop music and ska. The band continues to tour and create music that resonates with new generations, while staying true to the irreverent and catchy spirit that has made them a legend of British music.
