ABOUT THE ARTIST

Xutos & Pontapés

Xutos & Pontapés are one of the most iconic and influential bands in the history of Portuguese music, recognized as the pioneers of rock in Portugal. Formed in 1978 in Lisbon, the band has built a career of more than four decades, marked by numerous hits, memorable concerts and an extremely loyal fan base. Their music, which mixes rock, punk and elements of Portuguese culture, has made them a true national symbol.

The original line-up of Xutos & Pontapés included Zé Pedro (rhythm guitar), Kalú (drums), Tim (bass and vocals), and Zé Leonel (vocals). However, it was with the entry of João Cabeleira (lead guitar) and the departure of Zé Leonel, replaced by Tim as lead vocalist, that the band found the classic line-up that would accompany them throughout much of their career. Later, Gui (saxophone) joined the band, adding a new dimension to the sound of Xutos.

Xutos & Pontapés' first major success came with the release of the single "Sémen" in 1982, followed by the single "Toca e Foge" in 1983, which helped the band gain notoriety in the Portuguese music scene. However, it was with the album 78/82, released in 1982, that the band began to assert itself as an important force in national rock. The album included themes that would become classics of the band, such as "Mãe" and "Avé Maria."

In 1987, Xutos & Pontapés released the album Circo de Feras, which is widely considered one of the best Portuguese rock albums of all time. With hits like "Contentores," "Não Sou o Único," and "N'América," the album catapulted the band to national stardom. The lyrics, often laden with social criticism, combined with the raw energy of rock, resonated deeply with audiences, especially among young people.

In the following years, Xutos & Pontapés continued to release successful albums and tour the country. Albums such as 88 (1988) and Gritos Mudos (1990) further solidified their position as Portugal's biggest rock band. Songs like "Circo de Feras," "À Minha Maneira," and "O Homem do Leme" have become true anthems that continue to be played and sung by fans of all ages.

The 1990s saw Xutos & Pontapés maintain their popularity with the release of albums such as Dados Viciados (1997) and Oxigénio (1999). During this period, the band continued to evolve musically, experimenting with new sounds and influences, but without ever losing their essential identity of direct and authentic rock.

Xutos & Pontapés are known not only for their music, but also for their live concerts, which are celebrated for their energy and interaction with the audience. The band played on some of Portugal's biggest stages, including Estádio do Restelo in 2009, where they celebrated their 30-year career with a memorable concert. This event was a milestone in the band's history, reaffirming its importance in Portuguese culture.

Unfortunately, in 2017, the band faced the loss of one of its founding members, Zé Pedro, who passed away after a long battle with an illness. Zé Pedro was a charismatic figure and much loved, both by fans and by his bandmates. His death was a moment of great sadness, but Xutos & Pontapés decided to continue, honoring the legacy of Zé Pedro.

In 2019, the band released the album Duro, the first album after the death of Zé Pedro. The album was well received and showed that Xutos & Pontapés still had a lot to offer. The song "Fim do Mundo," in particular, stood out as a tribute to Zé Pedro and the band's resilient spirit.

Xutos & Pontapés are often described as the "biggest Portuguese rock band," and for good reason. They were pioneers in the development of rock in Portugal and continue to be a vital force in Portuguese music, with a rich discography and a constant presence on the country's stages. His ability to reinvent himself over the years, while staying true to his roots, is a testament to his talent and passion for music.

With a career spanning more than four decades, Xutos & Pontapés continue to be an unavoidable reference in Portuguese music, inspiring new generations of musicians and delighting fans of all ages. His legacy is a celebration of rock, friendship, and Portuguese culture, and his music will continue to be an essential part of the country's cultural identity.
