ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Arno Schmidt

Nasceu em Hamburgo a 18 de janeiro de 1914, mas passou grande parte da sua juventude na Silésia.
Durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial foi destacado para a Noruega, acabando como prisioneiro de guerra das tropas britânicas.
Trabalhou como intérprete e tradutor literário, traduzindo Edgar Allan Poe, William Faulkner, entre outros.
A obra literária de Schmidt é uma das mais singulares da literatura alemã do século XX, solipsista, ateia, provocadora como o próprio autor que desde 1958 até à sua morte em 1979 viveu isolado numa cabana em plena charneca de Lüneburg, no norte da Alemanha.
Aqui desenvolveu a sua própria teoria literária, refinando um estilo que oscila entre o coloquial e o ostensivamente complexo.
Leviatã e Espelhos Negros são as primeiras obras de Schmidt traduzidas para português.
