Nasceu em Pittsburgh e cresceu em Columbus, Ohio. Possui o grau de mestre em Literatura Americana e Inglesa na Universidade da Califórnia, em Berkeley. O seu trabalho é reconhecido internacionalmente nas áreas de espiritualidade, história cultural, crítica social e feminista e pensamento ecológico (politicas ambientais, ecofeminismo, ecofilosofia).
