SYNOPSIS
Samuel Gist was an orphan, sent from Bristol as an apprentice to Virginia in the early eighteenth century. He grew rich as a tobacco trader. When he died in 1815 he left land for his Virginian slaves to be freed. This is the story of Britain's treatment of children, of white and black slavery, of transatlantic trade and early industry.
