One day every century, the town of Wormwood appears, with a doorway to Heaven itself. It's due to appear on the 21st September 1889, and a passel of adventurers are heading for it: a travelling preacher and his simple messiah, a pack of outlaws, a monastic order, a reckless inventor and an ageing gunslinger. But Wormwood guards its secrets.
