ABOUT THE AUTHOR

L. Frank Baum

Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) was born in Chittenango, New York, and spent much of his childhood on a luxurious country estate, his father having made his fortune in the oil fields of Pennsylvania. When he turned fifteen, his father offered him a press that would help awaken his interest in writing. After getting married, she moved to South Dakota and took up different professions: in a theater, in newspapers and magazines, and for a time even raising chickens. His first book, published in 1866, deals with the breeding of these animals. He published a weekly newspaper for which he also wrote poetry, articles and editorials. He filed for bankruptcy in 1891 and the family moved to Chicago. Then he starts writing for children. His first two books are based on traditional tales; in one of these tales he introduces for the first time the character named Dorothy. This eventually leads to the creation of the enchanted land of Oz, and in 1900 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is born. He wrote 13 sequels to Oz, 9 fantasy novels, as well as many other works (a total of 59 novels, 4 of which are "lost"), 82 short stories, more than 200 poems, and an undetermined number of screenplays for stage and film. In some of his works he predicts the appearance of color television, portable computers ("The Master Key" - 1901), and mobile phones ("Tik-Tok of Oz" - 1914). The Wonderful Wizard of Oz remains Baum's masterpiece and is probably the most famous, if not only, American fairy tale.
