O fenómeno da refracção é regido por duas leis:

Primeira Lei da Refracção: o raio incidente, o raio refractado e a normal, no ponto de incidência, estão contidos num mesmo plano", ou seja, são coplanares; isto é, o plano de incidência e o plano da luz refractada coincidem.
Segunda Lei da Refracção: A Lei de Snell-Descartes é aquela em que se calcula o valor do desvio sofrido pela refracção da luz. Postula que os senos dos ângulos de incidência e refracção são directamente proporcionais às velocidades da onda nos respectivos meios.
