ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Elie Wiesel

Elie Wiesel (1928, Romania – 2016, New York), a Jewish writer and survivor of Nazi concentration camps, dedicated his work to Holocaust memories and the defense of other victims of persecution. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986 for his "work in defense of peace, redemption and human dignity," he is the author of an extensive body of work encompassing fiction, poetry, and essays, which has been translated into numerous languages.
Among his best-known books are Testament of a Murdered Jewish Poet and Night, which has sold over six million copies to date. Wiesel served on the United States Holocaust Memorial Board, playing a significant role in the creation of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.
He was a professor at Columbia University, City University of New York, Yale, and Boston University, where he taught Jewish Studies and Humanities and Social Thought. Over the years he received numerous distinctions, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (USA), the Congressional Gold Medal of the United States of America, the Grand Cross of the French Legion of Honor, the title of Knight of the Order of the British Empire, the Grand Officer Collar of the Order of the Star of Romania, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award.
