Philip Pullman was born in Norwich, England, in 1946. As a child, he lived in his country, Zimbabwe, and Australia. When he was eleven years old, his family returned permanently to England. He attended Exeter College, where he discovered his interest in fantasy literature. He had various professions before becoming a professor at Oxford. He then dedicated himself to literary creation, starting by writing plays and short stories. From 1985 onwards he began producing novels, but it was in 1995 that he achieved international success with the trilogy.
