Nine O'Clock Horses

From an early age, Amelia Norton was aware of her mother's childhood fears of the nine o'clock horses. Why would a fable, a nursery rhyme cause her mother to want to end her life? This is a story based on a true family during and after WWII in England. Perhaps we should all be afraid of the skeletons in our family's closets.
