Highlighting the role women played in Athenian society, this work examines the fascinating life of Neaera. In the course of her life, Neaera occupied almost every role that was played by a women in Athens: child, daughter, wife, mother, and "lady of the house"; slave, freed, free; prostitute; upstanding and respectable, criminal and adulterous.
