ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Thomas Merton

Thomas Merton (1915-1968) is perhaps the most influential American Catholic author of the 20th century. The Seven Storey Mountain It has sold millions of copies and has been translated into more than 15 languages. He has written over 60 books and countless poems and articles, whose themes range from monastic life to non-violence.
After an exuberant youth, Merton graduated in English from Columbia University before entering Gethsemani Abbey, of the Trappist Cistercian Order. He spent 27 years there, and his thinking evolved, leading him to consider the struggle for peace and against racism as the most urgent issues of his era. He became very active in this field, which earned him violent criticism from both Catholics and non-Catholics. At the end of his life, he dedicated himself to promoting the encounter between Western and Eastern religions.
