Christa Wolf (1929-2011) is certainly the literary figure from the former GDR with the greatest international projection. Her literary production always consciously and ethically followed the evolutionary process of the GDR, subverting the rigid principles of "socialist realism," essentially by placing the individual, and not an idealized historical process, at the center of her narrative constructions. She defended the conviction that it was up to women (and their writing) to establish peace, in opposition to the patriarchal warlike order, and actively engaged in maintaining a German socialist state, against the current of optimism that precipitated "German reunification."
