ABOUT THE AUTHOR

John Cheever

John Cheever was born in 1912 in Massachusetts and died in 1982 in New York. Considered one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century, his work was recognized with the awarding of the Howells Medal from the American National Academy of Arts and Letters in 1965. He is best known for his short stories, almost all of which were initially published in the magazine The New Yorker.
The book now being published is the second of two volumes in Portuguese of the complete short stories collected in the anthology. The stories of John Cheever, published in 1978, which that same year received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the National Critics Circle Award, and the American Book Award. Considered by John Updike to be the best stylist of his generation, praised by Saul Bellow and Vladimir Nabokov, John Cheever belongs in the lineage of writers such as Sherwood Anderson, J. D. Salinger, and Raymond Carver.
