Extracting Appalachia

The Consolidation Coal Company commissioned hundreds of pictures of its operations for publicity images, safety procedures, or archival information. Geographer Geoffrey L. Buckley uses company records, state and federal government documents, contemporary newspaper accounts, and other archival materials to show what these photographs reveal.
