The ascetic communities of the Betä ?sra’el (Ethiopian Jews) are the only Jewish "monastic" movement known to have existed in medieval times. This is the first comprehensive attempt to locate Betä ?sra’el religious communities, study their remains, and shed light on ascetic practices of Ethiopian Jews.
