ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Edgardo Xavier

Born in Huambo, Angola, (1946 - 8-7-2023) Rogério Edgar Martins Xavier, who adopted Edgardo Xavier as his stage name.
Poet, writer, painter, sculptor and art critic, he was born in Nova Lisboa, now Huambo, Angola, in 1946. Director of the Galeria Tempo, Lisbon, from 1986 to 1990, he was Commissioner of the Óbidos Biennials and was part of the Organization of the Vila Nova de Cerveira Biennials (I, II and IV). As Artistic Director he was part of the Organization of the 1st Estoril Contemporary Art Fair – 2003.
He was a member of the International Association of Art Critics – A.I.C.A./Portugal.
As a critic, he was a commissioner for the Óbidos Biennials and the organization of the Cerveira Biennials (I, II and IV), wrote numerous introductory texts, four books as a visual arts critic, and published poetry from 2007 to 2021. "Disheveled Love","Shelter Body", "Stone Corner", "Intimate Age", "Lisbon", "Blue like Silence", "Hoarse Writing", "Thistle's Word", "Red" and "Don't Step on the Ants"In 2018 he published "Loengo" a book of short stories and, in 2020, in partnership with Ernesto Matos, "Imagine Hominum", a book that brings together 181 prose texts. 2021- Chocolate/stories, a book that is part of the National Reading Plan. In partnership with the artist Nélio Saltão, he wrote 64 texts of enormous beauty alongside the same number of illustrations. We are talking about "Blue Apple", 2021. He participated in numerous anthologies, magazines, newspapers and, as a painter, writer, poet or critic, he was part of radio and television programs.
His work is represented in the Sabugal Municipal Museum, the National Museum of Anthropology of Angola, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Goiás – Goiânia, Brazil, the Cerveira Biennial Museum, the Amadora City Hall, the Seixal City Hall, Sonangol, Estoril-Sol, etc.
He wrote albums, essays, monographs, and books of poetry and short stories, notably about Manuel Cargaleiro, Neves e Sousa, Carlos Lança, Roberto Chichorro, Michael Barrett, and Paulo Ossião, among others.
