Boca do Inferno

A Portuguese-Brazilian poet, he was born in 1633 in Salvador, Brazil, and died in 1696 in Recife. He studied Law in Coimbra, but it was in Brazil that he wrote almost all of his poetic work. An eccentric and controversial figure, his works are marked by the libertinism and baroque style of the time. He made use of satire, and even in religious poems he did not shy away from playful temptation. His work was not published until later, reaching the 19th century only through manuscript copies and oral transmission.
