ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Gil Vicente

Gil Vicente is the most important figure in Portuguese theatre and occupies a foundational place in the dramaturgy of the interliterary system of the Iberian Peninsula, where he stands alongside such important names as Juan del Encina or Lucas Fernández. Many unknowns surround his biography. He was probably born around 1465 and died around 1536, most likely in the city of Évora. Gil Vicente's dramatic activity was developed within the Portuguese court, spanning the reigns of King Manuel I and King John III. He therefore left us a theatrical production permeated by mental models in transition to modernity, a work committed to the renewal of medieval dramatic forms of a popular, religious, and courtly nature. Copilaçam The 1562 edition, organized by his children Luís and Paula Vicente, constitutes the first edition of Gil Vicente's complete works, bringing together the different genres he cultivated, both of a devotional nature (miracles, mysteries or moralities) and of a secular nature (comedies, farces or tragicomedies). From 1502, the date of the performance of... Monologue of the Cowboy or Play of the Visitation, until 1536, the year of Forest of DeceptionsThe Portuguese playwright wrote 44 plays, of which 15 are in Portuguese, 11 in Spanish, and the remaining 18 in both languages.
