The battle at Alesia in 52 BC was the culmination of a centuries old loathing between the Romans and the Gauls. Gaul was implicated in the global expansionist process of Roman might and became a political pawn in the hands of the triumvirs Pompey, Crassus and Caesar. Alesia was the final manifestation of this deep mistrust between two peoples.
