Christa Wolf (1929-2011) é certamente a figura literária da ex-RDA com maior projeção internacional. A sua produção literária acompanhou sempre, de forma consciente e eticamente empenhada, o processo de evolução da RDA, não deixando com isso de subverter os princípios rígidos de um "realismo socialista", essencialmente por colocar o indivíduo, e não um processo histórico idealizado, no centro das suas construções narrativas. Defende a convicção de que cabe à mulher (e à sua escrita) o papel de instaurar a paz, por oposição à ordem patriarcal bélica, e empenhou-se ativamente na manutenção de um Estado socialista alemão, contra a corrente de otimismo que precipitou a "reunificação alemã".
