A Varanda

by Jean Genet
Publisher: Cotovia, September of 2010 ‧

A Varanda

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Jean Genet

Born illegitimate and abandoned by his parents, Jean Genet was born in Paris on December 19, 1910.
At just 10 years old, he was accused of theft and taken to an institution for young offenders. Despite being innocent, Genet decided, due to the false accusation, to become a thief. Thus, he spent much of his childhood and youth in institutions for delinquents, developing his own belief: to harden himself against pain and reject a world that did not accept him.
In the 1930s, Genet lived in various European countries as a thief until, in 1943, after serving a prison sentence for robbery, he began to write. His plays convey his experiences in prison, addressing themes such as prostitution, theft, and homosexuality.
As a playwright, Genet became an important voice in the theatre of the absurd. His work also includes several novels and film scripts. He died on April 15, 1986.
