Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. Up till a few years ago it was commonly believed that the English race was the only one in Europe that was unable to make any contribution to the literature of folk-song. Opinions may still be divided as to the artistic worth of our national folk-songs, but their existence, and in great abundance, can no longer be disputed. A similar misconception with regard to English folk-dances awaits refutation. Maybe, the contents of this volume, following upon the issue of The Morris Book and other similar publications, will aid in the work of enlightenment.
