At Night in Tapada - The Fireflies

When night falls over the Tapada Nacional de Mafra, the forest transforms into an even more magical setting.
Between the end of May and the month of June, there is a unique phenomenon that illuminates the darkness: the shimmering flight of fireflies.
This experience happens only once a year and is truly unmissable. In an environment free from light pollution, it's possible to observe a natural spectacle of light communication, where hundreds of males glow as they fly in search of females during the mating season.
Fireflies are insects of the order Coleoptera, belonging to the family Lampyridae, a group in which, in most species, both larvae and adults produce light. In other words, they are bioluminescent organisms.
We embark on this luminous adventure accompanied by a guide who will explain this fascinating phenomenon. The route is mixed, with a pedestrian component of approximately 4 km, the remainder of the journey being completed in an electric vehicle.
On the dates leading up to World Children's Day, May 29, 30 and 31, the route is shorter and children of all ages are allowed.
