Zana Muhsen was born in Birmingham to a Yemeni father and an English mother. She was sold by her father and forced into marriage in Yemen, where she was subjected to humiliation and violence in a remote village. Eight years later she managed to escape, but had to leave behind her son Marcus and her sister Nadia, to whom she promised that she would do everything to free them.
