Yvette K. Centeno nasceu em Lisboa, em 1940, numa família de origem germano-polaca. É casada, tem quatro filhos, e em sua casa a música e a literatura estiveram sempre presentes. Licenciou-se em Filologia Germânica com uma dissertação sobre O homem sem qualidades, de Musil, e doutorou-se com uma tese sobre A alquimia no Fausto de Goethe. É desde 1983 Professora Catedrática da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, onde fundou o Gabinete de Estudos de Simbologia, actualmente integrado no Centro de Estudos do Imaginário Literário. Ainda em estudante interessou-se por teatro, escreveu peças e rábulas, fundou o CITAC em Coimbra. Tem publicado literatura infantil, ensaio de investigação, poesia, teatro e ficção, com romances como Três histórias de amor (1994), Os jardins de Eva (1998) e Amores secretos (2006), tendo parte da sua obra traduzida em França, Espanha e Alemanha. Entre os autores que traduziu contam-se Shakespeare, Goethe, Stendhal, Brecht, Celan e Fassbinder.
