Iniciou a sua formação na área industrial e formou-se em Berlim. A partir de 1973 começou a trabalhar em diversas agências de publicidade, primeiro como escritor, depois como diretor criativo. Entre 1980 e 1982 viveu na Bolívia e trabalhou como jornalista 'free-lancer'. Regressou à Alemanha e continuou a trabalhar em publicidade até fundar, em 1990, a sua própria agência. Desde 1995 que também leciona Comunicação Visual na Universidade de Weimar.
