Villiers de L'Isle-Adam

Auguste Villiers de L'Isle-Adam (1838-1889) foi um poeta, dramaturgo e contista francês que se destacou sobretudo no género fantástico, na criação de uma nova linguagem poética e no recurso à ironia enquanto instrumento estilístico.
Grande admirador de Edgar Allan Poe, Charles Baudelaire e Richard Wagner, próximo de Joris-Karl Huysmans e amigo de Stéphane Mallarmé, Villiers foi um escritor fora do seu tempo que, oriundo de uma família aristocrática em ruína, viveu grande parte da sua vida na pobreza.
Com a sua estética verdadeiramente moderna, desempenhou um papel fundamental no surgimento do Simbolismo em Franca, sendo considerado pelos seus contemporâneos um génio.
L'Éve future (1886), Axel (1890) e Contos Cruéis (1883) estão entre as suas obras mais célebres.
