A sua história viria a dar origem ao "julgamento do século" em Paris, com Victor Kravchenko a processar o jornal francês Les belles Lettres por difamação ao considerar que a sua fuga tinha sido orquestrada e que ele próprio era um agente norte-americano. Deste episódio resultaria o segundo livro de Kravchenko, intitulado "Eu escolhi a justiça"(1950). Kravchenko viria a falecer em 1966 em Nova Iorque e a sua morte permanece rodeada em mistério, pois apesar da versão oficial indicar como causa o suicídio, subsiste a dúvida se terá sido morto por agentes soviéticos.
