Vatsyayana foi um sábio e nobre filósofo hindu que terá vivido na Índia entre os séculos IV e VI, no auge da Dinastia Gupta, período durante o qual foram gerados textos marcantes para a literatura sânscrita e para a cultura védica.
A tradição diz ter sido um estudante celibatário que viveu em Pataliputra, um importante centro de aprendizagem. O Kama Sutra é um breve resumo de vários trabalhos anteriores pertencentes a uma tradição conhecida como Kama Shastra.
