Tom Rob Smith nasceu em 1979, em Londres, cidade onde vive.
Licenciado por Cambridge, em 2001, passou um ano em Itália com uma bolsa de estudos em escrita criativa e trabalhou como argumentista durante os últimos cinco anos.
O seu primeiro romance, A Criança N.º 44, esteve na lista para o Man Booker Prize em 2008, na lista para o Costa First Novel Award e para o Desmond Elliott Prize inaugural e venceu o Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award, da Crime Writer’s Association, pelo melhor romance de aventura/thriller de 2008.
