Tim Berners-Lee inventou a World Wide Web em 1989. Subsequentemente, fundou e dirigiu o World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), que supervisiona normas e protocolos internacionais que regem a Web. É também diretor da World Wide Web Foundation; professor emérito no MIT e na Universidade de Oxford; foi cofundador e CTO da Inrupt.com, uma empresa que visa aumentar o controlo dos utilizadores sobre as suas vidas digitais; é o autor de Weaving the Web. Entre as suas muitas distinções, incluem-se: o ACM A.M. Turing Award, conhecido como o Prémio Nobel da Computação; o Prémio da Paz de Seul; o Prémio da Fundação Príncipe das Astúrias; e o Prémio Japão. Em 2004, foi feito cavaleiro pela Rainha Isabel II, e em 2007 recebeu a Ordem de Mérito.
