Economista e demógrafo inglês nascido em 1766 e falecido em 1834. Tornou-se conhecido graças à elaboração de uma teoria segundo a qual o aumento da população devia ser controlado. Esta ideia assentava em duas premissas: por um lado, Malthus advogava que o crescimento da população punha em risco o progresso da Humanidade; por outro, entendia que nunca seria possível produzir elementos em quantidade suficiente para sustentar toda a população. Este pensamento deu origem a uma corrente doutrinária conhecida por malthusianismo. A obra central de Malthus é An Essay on the Principle of Population as it Affects the Future Improvement of Society (1798).
