Thomas More

Thomas More (1478-1535) foi um insigne advogado e jurista inglês, exerceu cargos de administração na cidade de Londres e foi deputado ao parlamento em três ocasiões.
A sua vasta experiência profissional e política fez com que Henrique VIII o chamasse a integrar o seu Conselho Real (Privy Council) e, depois, no auge de uma carreira política, o nomeasse Chanceler do Reino, em 1529. Intransigente nos seus princípios morais e de cidadão católico, Thomas More foi condenado à morte pelo mesmo Henrique VIII depois de se recusar a jurar a Lei da Sucessão, e depois da Supremacia, que consagrava o Rei como chefe da Igreja Católica inglesa e consumava a rutura com o Papa.
Foi beatificado em 1886 pelo Papa Leão XIII. Quarenta e nove anos mais tarde, Pio XI canonizava-o.
