Theodor Kallifatides nasceu na Grécia em 1938. Em 1964 mudou-se para a Suécia. Após vários empregos, ensinou Filosofia na universidade e foi diretor de uma revista literária. De 1976 em diante passou a viver exclusivamente da escrita, quer dos seus livros, quer de traduções e da colaboração com jornais e revistas. Recebeu vários prémios. Entre os seus títulos de ficção, ensaio, autobiografia e autoficção, estão Mães e Filhos ou O Cerco de Troia.
