The Ting Tings
The Ting Tings are a British indie pop duo formed in 2007 in Salford, Greater Manchester, consisting of Katie White (vocals and guitar) and Jules De Martino (vocals and drums). Known for their vibrant sound and humorous lyrics, they have achieved worldwide fame with unforgettable riffs and choruses.
Katie and Jules met as teenagers in London, but only started collaborating again after both settled in Manchester, sharing influences from disco, punk and 80s pop. In 2008 they adopted the name The Ting Tings - inspired by a Hong Kong chess radio host - and began playing in small local clubs, refining their minimalist and danceable style.
In May 2008 they released their debut single "That's Not My Name", which, with its insistent guitar riff and satirical self-promotional lyrics, quickly climbed the UK charts. This was followed by "Shut Up and Let Me Go", a libertine track with a funk beat, which consolidated their status on international dance floors.
Their debut album, We Started Nothing (2008), also produced "Be the One" and "Hands," and went multi-platinum in the UK, US, and Australia. The transparency of the production—guitar, drums, and vocals at the center—and the immediate appeal of the choruses made The Ting Tings a pop phenomenon combining indie attitude and mainstream accessibility.
In 2012 they released their second album, Sounds from Nowheresville, where they explored electronic textures and collaborated with soul revival producers, but without achieving the commercial impact of their first record. They regained momentum in 2014 with the EP Wrong Club, returning to dry guitars and danceable grooves in songs like "Wrong Club" and "Do It Again".
After a hiatus, they returned in 2018 with Super Critical, an album marked by disco-funk influences and deep beats, which included "Eat Your Heart Out" and "Get It Right," showing that they continue to innovate within their alternative pop universe.
On stage, Katie and Jules stand out for their contagious energy: performances where drums and guitar alternate with dance sections and colorful projections, creating a retro-futuristic party atmosphere. With over fifteen years in the business, The Ting Tings continue to inspire new artists and prove that the "guitar + beat + catchy chorus" formula remains timeless.
