Jacques Tardi nasceu em Valence, França, em 1946. Estudou na Academia de Belas Artes de Lyon e na Escola Superior de Artes Decorativas de Paris antes de publicar a sua primeira história de BD, com argumento de Jean Giraud, na mítica revista Pilote, em 1969. Em 1971 inicia-se na ficção política com "Rumeur sur le Rouergue", com argumento de Pierre Christin. No ano seguinte, com argumento próprio, surge "Adieu Brindavoine". Em 1974 publica "O Demónio dos Gelos" (com Christin), no mesmo ano "La veritable histoire du Soldad Inconnu" e em 1975, "Un épisode banal de la guérre des tranchées", é publicado no jornal Libération. Em 1976 iniciou aquela que viria a tornar-se, a sua série mais popular: "Adéle Blanc-Sec", adaptada ao cinema por Luc Besson. Venceu o Grande Prémio de Angoulême (1985) e o Prêmio Saint-Michel, (1977, 1979) e recebeu várias outras distinções: três prémios no Festival de BD de Angoulême, dois prémios Max e Moritz (Alemanha), dois Eisner Awards (Estados Unidos) e um Einhard-Preis (Alemanha). Tardi foi ainda distinguido pelo governo francês com a Ordem de Cavaleiro das Artes e das Letras.
