Nasceu em 1969 em Niigata, no Japão, sendo o artista responsável pelo extremamente popular mangá da Shonen Jump Hikaru no Go, que ganhou o prémio cultural Tezuka Osamu na categoria Shinsei ("Revelação"), em 2003, e o prémio de Mangá da Shogakukan, em 2000.
Obata é igualmente o artista dos mangás Arabian Majin, Bokentan Lamp Lamp, Ayatsuri Sakon, Cyborg Jichan G, Bakuman e All You Need is Kill, entre outros.
