T.Rex

T. Rex was one of the most influential bands in glam rock, led by the charismatic Marc Bolan, who played a crucial role in defining the sound and aesthetics of '70s music. First formed in 1967 in London as Tyrannosaurus Rex, the band started out with an acoustic, psychedelic style before becoming the flashy, electric rock icon that conquered the masses.

The band's early albums, such as My People Were Fair and Had Sky in Their Hair... But Now They're Content to Wear Stars on Their Brows (1968), featured an acoustic sound led by Bolan and percussionist Steve Peregrin Took. The music was rich in psychedelic and folk elements, marked by Bolan's poetic and mystical lyrics. However, it was with the change to an electric sound and the abbreviation of the name to T. Rex in 1970 that the band began to find its true audience.

Resounding success came with the album Electric Warrior (1971), which included the single "Get It On" (known in the US as "Bang a Gong (Get It On)"), one of the biggest anthems of glam rock. The album featured a fusion of catchy guitar riffs, seductive vocals, and an exuberant style that defined the genre. Other hits from this era include "Jeepster" and "Hot Love," which helped solidify the band's popularity.

On The Slider (1972), Bolan continued to explore the glam sound, with tracks such as "Metal Guru" and "Telegram Sam" cementing the band's status as one of the greatest of the era. Bolan's theatricality, combined with his magnetic charm and striking visual style, made him a cultural icon, often compared to David Bowie, with whom he shared the avant-garde of the glam movement.

Despite its initial success, T. Rex's popularity began to wane in the mid-1970s, due to changing musical trends and a lack of consistency in later releases. However, Bolan maintained his artistic relevance and continued to record and perform until his tragic death on September 16, 1977, in a car accident.

T. Rex's legacy remains timeless, with his music and aesthetic influencing generations of artists. In 2020, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognizing their monumental contribution to popular music. With immortal anthems and Marc Bolan's incomparable personality, T. Rex continues to be a symbol of creativity, extravagance, and innovation in rock.
