Ganhou os prémios de jornalismo National Magazine Award e Front Page Award pelas suas reportagens sobre temas sociais. Foi chefe de redacção da Saturday Review, onde conheceu Cousteau. Posteriormente passou a escrever os textos de muitos dos seus documentários, entre os quais aqueles que ganharam os prémios Peabody e ACE. Vive em Paris.
