A paixão de Susan Abernethy por História começou há cinquenta anos e levou-a a frequentar uma licenciatura em História na University of North Carolina, em Charlotte. Atualmente, é membro da Rocky Mountain Medieval and Renaissance Association, da Society for Renaissance Studies e da Historical Association.
O seu trabalho foi publicado em vários websites e revistas de temática histórica, incluindo participações especiais em podcasts dedicados à História. O seu blogue, The Freelance History Writer, publica de forma contínua mais de quinhentos artigos históricos desde 2012, com especial foco na história europeia, Tudor, medieval, renascentista, da Idade Moderna e na história das mulheres. Atualmente, encontra-se a trabalhar no seu próximo livro de não-ficção.
