Stephen Lay foi professor de História na Universidade de Monash, em Melbourne, Austrália, e diretor-executivo do Pólo da Universidade de Monash em Londres. Atualmente, é assistente de pós-graduações na Universidade de Oxford, e tem publicado artigos científicos em revistas académicas. Se vários historiadores de língua inglesa já tinham estudado a História de Portugal na época dos Descobrimentos, Stephen Lay marcou a diferença ao centrar a sua pesquisa na época medieval. Com o livro Assim Nasceu Portugal - Os Reis da Reconquista Portuguesa, Stephen Lay dá um forte contributo para a divulgação da História de Portugal junto dos leitores anglo-saxónicos.
