Nascido em 1946, é editor dos jornais Welt e Welt am Sonntag.
De 2010 a 2013 foi sócio e diretor-executivo do canal de notícias N24.
Antes disso, foi durante muitos anos redator-chefe da revista de notícias Der Spiegel, assim como fundador e diretor-executivo da Spiegel TV.
Escreveu uma série de livros, entre eles o bestseller internacional Der BaaderMeinhofKomplex (1985), Heimatschutz (2014, com Dirk Laabs), Hitlers Menschenhändler. Das Schicksal der Austauschjuden (2013, com Thomas Ammann) e Digitale Diktatur (2014, com Thomas Ammann).
