Shaghayegh Moazzami

Shaghayegh Moazzami was born in Iran in 1986. He graduated from the Tehran University of Fine Arts in 2010. In July 2016, through a sham marriage, he left Iran and went into exile in Canada, where he still lives in Montreal. He began working as an editorial cartoonist for Iranian magazines, which are based outside of Iran and cover uncensored news about the country. Most of his cartoons focus on the rights of women and minorities in Iran. Fearing persecution and political retaliation, he published under a pseudonym. However, after some time, he decided not to self-censor and to sign his work with his own name. This decision means he can no longer visit Iran.
