Scott Hampton nasceu em 1959 em High Point, Carolina do Norte, e cresceu embrenhado em literatura clássica, romances de horror e banda desenhada. O seu irmão mais velho, Bo, foi responsável por alimentar um enorme apetite por banda desenhada em Scott. Foi natural que, quando Bo se tornou ilustrador de banda desenhada, o irmão mais novo lhe seguisse o exemplo (ambos estagiaram com Will Eisner em 1976!) Scott tornou-se um dos mais respeitados artistas e contadores de histórias no meio da banda desenhada. O seu trabalho em Silverheels (Pacific Comics, 1983) é considerado o primeiro título de banda desenhada pintado com continuidade. Além de ilustrar as suas histórias, Scott ilustrou livros de alguns dos melhores autores de fantasia, incluindo Neil Gaiman (Books of Magic), Robert E. Howard (Pigeons from Hell), Clive Barker (Tapping the Vein), Archie Goodwin (Batman: Night Cries) e David Brin (The Life Eaters).
