Nascido numa família onde a arquitetura desempenha um papel importante, François Schuiten é argumentista e desenhador. Produziu Aux medianes de Cymbiola e Le Rail com Claude Renard e depois com Luc Schuiten, o ciclo Les Terres Hollows. Desde 1983, trabalhou com Benoît Peeters nas séries Les Cités obscures e Revoir Paris, cujo último volume foi publicado em 2016.
Em 2012, publicou La Douce como autor completo. Em 2002, recebeu o Grande Prêmio do Festival BD de Angoulême. Ele também decorou várias estações de metro, projetou pavilhões de exposições universais e projetou o Train World Museum em Bruxelas.
