Saul António Gomes nasceu em Leiria, em 1963. Doutorado em História, leciona na Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra. É Membro Correspondente da Academia Portuguesa da História. Foi Prémio Gulbenkian de Ciência, em 1999, pela sua obra, em coautoria com Cristina Pina e Sousa, Intimidade e Encanto. O Mosteiro Cisterciense de Santa Maria de Cós (Alcobaça). Recebeu, em 2005, a Medalha de Honra (grau ouro) atribuída pelo Município da Batalha. Sobre a região alto-estremenha publicou, entre outras obras, O Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Vitória no Século XV, Vésperas Batalhinas. Estudos de História e Arte, Introdução à História do Castelo de Leiria, Porto de Mós. Colectânea Documental e Histórica. Séculos XII a XIV e In Limine Conscriptionis. Documentos, Chancelaria e Cultura no Mosteiro de Santa Cruz de Coimbra.
